(In the nkjv what inspired this “poem” is Isaiah 9:2 (and in the orthodox study Bible it’s Isaiah 9:1), but what really got me to write this was experiencing a low point in my life. Now it is important to keep in mind this is a biased view and we are reminded in 1 Thessalonians 5:5 that “You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.” meaning no matter what I felt or thought of in the poem, it is not what actually is. Again, this was how I felt during that time, and not what actually is.)
"The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.” (Isaiah 9:2)
In the darkness where we are blinded
How much greater is God
How much brighter is Christ
We wander in the rain
A bit lost and forgotten
Feeling hopeless, maybe a little forsaken
Wanting to repent from our old flesh
Seeking Christ at last
Yet the knowledge of our unfaithfulness drags us past
Past thoughts on forgiveness and mercy
And even turning away from sin
Because why do that
When we would stumble again?
Thus in the darkness we stay
Trapped by our own ways
And the wisdom of the world
Failing time and time again
To live upright and according to the Lord
Sometimes distracted selfishly
Other times seeking the lusts of the flesh
Yes, the pride of life consumed me
Who can rescue me now?
For I am helpless, weak in the flesh
How great the darkness that shrouds me
How faithless am I who could not see!
But despite the sin, the shame, the sorrow
The lack of self control
And the numbing ways of the world
God still walks by my side
Yes, the rain around me shows me
It is God Who is still in control
For every drop He knows and let’s fall
And though the mood it brings with it
Is sad and all
This is what gives life
As out of the rain
Comes forth renewal
The birth of new life
And the sign in the clouds
Like that of a rainbow
As Jesus was baptized and His disciples
So let the world be washed clean
By this drizzle
In the darkness I am
Yet even this will pass
And the Light shall come
And fill me with purpose
For even in this great darkness
Even in the storm
I am at peace
For the Lord is with me
Who despite my many failings
Did not forsake me
But embraces me in the dark
And I remember
In the darkness
How much greater is the Light
-thank You Jesus, for being faithful to me, even when I am faithless, Your power, wisdom and Love is made known. Amen.
